Yet, in order to free the ship, you need to slay Mithrix. Mithrix is Providence’s brother from the first game. He’s the final boss in this area. They changed how you regain items. Now you get a percentage back based on mithrix's current health. Example, mithrix at 70% health, you get 30% of your items back. It's much less of a pain. The rest of the commencement level as a while tho, in my opinion, is 10x more tedious and lackluster/cheap than it already was.
Dakka Chimeras are the biggest threat. Prioritize them first. They will just kill your ass if you ignore them. DO NOT run in a straight line towards or away from them ever. Do not take your eyes off them for more than a second; if you focus on something else they will inevitably bomb your ass and you will get oneshot.

In summary, you shouldn't have to do any loops to be able to beat him. I think you probably just needed to get to Commencement a bit faster. Which is easier said than done.
